Canadian Naval Reserves divers to recover debris & litter in Halifax Harbour TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, members from the Canadian Naval Reserves will recover harmful marine debris and shoreline litter at Point Pleasant Park. Previous cleanups have recovered fireworks, coconuts and shopping carts, among other items. What will divers recover this year? WHEN: Tuesday, September 1, 2009 9:45 a.m. ADT - Recommended arrival time 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. ADT - Divers from the Canadian Naval Reserves will comb the shores and reveal recovered litter (*)10:00 - 11:30 a.m. ADT - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: Point Pleasant Park, off Black Rock Beach just south of the HALTERM Tower WHO: Todd Dickey, Chapter Coordinator, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Jill Dwyer, Program Manager, TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, Vancouver Aquarium Commander Richard Oland, Commanding Officer, HMCS SCOTIAN National Defence WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year as many as 75,000 Canadians will work together from September 19-27 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Halifax citizens are encouraged to drop by Point Pleasant Park on Saturday, September 19th at 10 a.m. to help clean the city's shoreline and participate in the event kick-off.
