Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup dives into the Bow River to see what "treasures" can be found
Canadian Naval Reserves divers to recover debris & litter from the Bow River at St. Patrick's Park near the Calgary Zoo TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, divers from the Canadian Naval Reserves' HMCS Tecumseh will recover marine debris and shoreline litter from the Bow River at St. Patrick's Park by the Calgary Zoo. Previous cleanups have recovered fireworks, coconuts and shopping carts. What will divers recover this year? WHEN: Tuesday, September 1, 2009 10:00 a.m. MST - Recommended arrival time 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. MST - Divers from the Canadian Naval Reserves will enter the water and retrieve recovered litter (*)9:30 - 11:30 a.m. MST - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: Bow River shoreline at St. Patrick's Park, Calgary, Alberta Meeting point at south parking lot of Calgary Zoo, 1300 Zoo Road NE WHO: Ellen Dungen, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Mike McDermid, Vancouver Aquarium Vance Gough, HMCS Tecumseh, Canadian Naval Reserves WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year as many as 75,000 Canadians will work together from September 19-27 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.
