TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ -
WHAT: To help kick off the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline
Cleanup, members from the Ottawa Police Marine Unit and Canadian
Naval Reserves will recover marine debris and shoreline litter at
the base of Parliament Hill in the Ottawa River - where the Rideau
Canal enters into the Ottawa River.
Some of the more unusual items recovered in the past amongst the
regular shoreline litter include a bike with no spokes and guard
rails. With thousands of pounds of debris sitting at the bottom of
the Ottawa River, what will divers recover this year?

WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals
and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and
it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from
land based sources.
This year as many as 75,000 Canadians will work together from
September 19-27 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our
shorelines and waterways during the 16th annual TD Great Canadian
Shoreline Cleanup.
