Canadian Naval Reserves divers to recover debris & litter from around Deadman's Island in Stanley Park. TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, divers from the Canadian Naval Reserves' HMCS Discovery will recover marine debris and shoreline litter from Burrard Inlet at Deadman's Island in Stanley Park in Vancouver. Previous dives have recovered cars, coconuts and shopping carts. What will divers recover this year? WHEN: Tuesday, September 1, 2009 9:30 a.m. PST - Recommended arrival time 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. PST - Divers from the Canadian Naval Reserves will enter the water and retrieve recovered litter (*)9:30 - 11:30 a.m. PST - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: HMCS Discovery Jetty Canadian Forces Naval Reserve, HMCS Discovery, Vancouver, BC 1200 Stanley Park Drive (Deadman's Island, Stanley Park) WHO: Aurora Bonin, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Eric Solomon, VP, Conservation, Research & Education, Vancouver Aquarium Elaine Fisher, Lieutenant-Commander, HMCS Discovery, Canada Naval Reserves WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year as many as 75,000 Canadians will work together from September 19-27 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Vancouver citizens are encouraged to drop by Kitsilano Beach Park on Saturday, September 19th at 10 a.m. to help clean the city's shoreline and participate in the event kick-off.
