MONTREAL, April 30 /CNW Telbec/ - Forty students from 12 Montreal-area
CEGEPs received scholarships with a total value of $40,000 at the 40 ans, 40
bourses gala yesterday evening. The Regroupement des fondations collégiales de
Montréal, in collaboration with the business community and the institutions,
celebrated the CEGEPs' 40-year history by joining forces with 40 companies to
offer 40 scholarships of $1,000 each to students to support their efforts in
achieving academic excellence in all fields of study.
    Earlier this year, students at the 12 Montreal-area CEGEPs were invited
to apply for the scholarship awards. A jury comprising of representatives from
the CEGEP foundations and TD Canada Trust, the event's major partner, reviewed
more than 650 applications.
    "Supporting education means helping to develop our next generation of
tomorrow's leaders," said Christine Marchildon, Senior Vice-President, Quebec
region, TD Canada Trust and the event's honorary president. "We congratulate
CEGEPs on its 40-year history and proudly join with our local community
partners in honouring this institution for its commitment to making post
secondary education more accessible to students in Quebec."

training youth and adults so they can make a high-quality contribution to the
community. They have democratized and facilitated access to higher education,"
said Paul-Emile Bourque, Executive Director of the Cégep de Saint-Laurent and
member of the board of the Regroupement des fondations collégiales de
Montréal. "They have also proven to be an outstanding economic development
tool by training new generations as well as providing opportunities for adults
already in the job market to perfect their skills."
