TD Waterhouse Investing in Youth initiative helps bring the 44 year old
    challenge to the inner-city

    HALIFAX, Jan. 31 /CNW/ - Through the support of TD Waterhouse's Investing
in Youth initiative, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Young Canadian's Challenge
is being brought to inner-city and disadvantaged youth in Halifax. The TD
initiative is part of a national outreach designed to increase participation
in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme by ensuring the Award is made
available, without barriers, to all youth in Canada. The TD investment has
provided funding for a local Duke of Edinburgh Field Officer to recruit and
support Halifax participants.
    On Monday, February 5, Halifax youth will have the opportunity to meet
Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Financial Group at a reception
celebrating TD Waterhouse's "Investing in Youth" initiative.
    The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an exciting self-development program
available to all young people, equipping them with life skills to make a
difference to themselves, their communities and their country. It was created
in 1956, and started in Canada in 1963, and is open to all young people
between the ages of 14 and 25.
    Founded on the premise that young people growing up today face many
difficulties for personal achievement, the Award is designed to stimulate and
encourage self-reliance and discipline, perseverance and determination,
initiative and creativity, community responsibility, and fitness of body and
mind.

              -   Kevin Malone, National President, The Duke of Edinburgh's
                  Award

    What:     Approximately 40 Award participants will be in attendance
              demonstrating a variety of activities and skills that can be
              part of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award including outdoor
              camping, cake decorating and jewelry-making. The 18th Royal
              Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, many of whom are also Duke
              participants, will also perform a Silent Drill.
