TD Bank Financial Group wins Globe and Mail Business for the Arts Award
TORONTO, July 10 /CNW/ - Each year, not-for-profit arts organizations
from across Canada nominate businesses large and small for the Globe and Mail
Business for the Arts Awards. The winners are selected by a jury of artists
and businesses in each of four categories. This past May, Tafelmusik proudly
nominated TD Bank Financial Group in the category of "Most Effective Corporate
Program." Tafelmusik is thrilled that TD Bank Financial Group's support of the
performing arts and music education in Canada is being recognized by Business
for the Arts (formerly The Council for Business and the Arts in Canada) with
this award. The winners of this year's Globe and Mail Business for the Arts
Awards will receive their Awards at a Gala event at Roy Thomson Hall on
October 22, 2007.
TD Bank Financial Group shares in Tafelmusik's commitment to music
education in Canada. Through their generous funding and sponsorship,
Tafelmusik will continue to open its doors to new audiences and train the next
generation of world class period music performers. In 2004, an innovative
partnership was established by Tafelmusik to become the University of
Toronto's Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence - bringing the best in
period-performance practice to some of Canada's most talented young musicians.
Tafelmusik was pleased to have TD sign on as the founding supporter of this
programme in partnership with the University of Toronto. TD Bank Financial
Group is also the founding sponsor of Tafelmusik's Face the Musik programme,
designed to introduce young people between the ages of 18 and 30 to the arts,
while making activities such as concerts more accessible.
"TD supports a variety of arts and culture programs across Canada. We
feel that encouraging appreciation for the arts among young Canadians is an
important aspect of their education," says Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair and
Education Champion, TD Bank Financial Group. "TD also supports a number of
institutions and events that showcase Canada's wealth of artistic abilities
and also gives young talent a chance to flourish."
"The support of TD Bank Financial Group has allowed Tafelmusik to develop
world-class period performance educational programs. As the Baroque
Orchestra-in-Residence at the University of Toronto, we have been enjoying
much success in these programs, which will include, starting in the 2008-2009
academic year, a Masters Program in Performance on period instruments. The
strength of this partnership with TD will allow us to continue to reach
thousands of university students and young people each year," states
Tafelmusik's Music Director Jeanne Lamon.
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, led by Music Director Jeanne Lamon and
founded in 1979, is one of the world's leading period performance ensembles.
All members of the Orchestra are specialists in historical performance
practice, and their collaboration results in a delightful transparency,
vitality and richness of sound. Tafelmusik is the Baroque
Orchestra-in-Residence at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. The
Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, specializing in baroque performance practice and
vocal technique, was formed in 1981 to complement the Orchestra. Tafelmusik
performs over 50 concerts a year at home in Toronto, tours extensively around
the world, has released over 70 CDs and has received nine Juno Awards. In
2005, Tafelmusik received a Grammy Award nomination.
TD Bank Financial Group is committed to supporting music across Canada.
In addition to supporting the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir,
TD Bank Financial Group sponsors music festivals across the country, the Royal
Conservatory of Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Canadian
Opera Company and also supports a variety of local, regional and national
programs across Canada promoting literacy, health, education and the
