TD Waterhouse Investing in Youth Initiative helps bring The Duke of Edinburgh's Award to St. John's youth
Saturday event brings together youth from Froude Avenue, Rabbittown, Shea Heights and the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centres ST. JOHN'S, March 6 /CNW/ - Inner city youth in St. John's now have greater access to The Duke of Edinburgh's Award thanks to the TD Waterhouse Investing in Youth Initiative. TD Waterhouse's goal is to remove barriers and increase participation in the Award and has provided funding for a local Field Officer who will focus on working with youth from Froude Avenue, Rabbittown, Shea Heights, and the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centres. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an exciting self-development program available to all young people ages 14-24, equipping them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and their country. Created in 1956, the Award is designed to stimulate and encourage self-reliance, discipline, perseverance, determination, initiative, creativity, community responsibility and fitness of body and mind. More than 2,600 youth from Newfoundland and Labrador are participating in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. What: Current Award participants will display their talents and take part in Adventurous Journey Training such as developing map and compass skills, outdoor cooking, and shelter construction Who: Hon. Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment Mr. Steve Noseworthy, TD Waterhouse Mr. Charles Cook, Newfoundland and Labrador President, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award 25 Award Participants from Froude Avenue Community Centre, Rabbitown Community Centre, St. John Bosco School, Shea Heights and the Four Winds Aboriginal Youth Centre Where: Burry Heights Camp and Retreat Centre Salmonier Line, Route 90, Exit 35 off the Trans Canada Highway When: Saturday March 8 Award participant activity challenges: 2:30-3:30 pm Speaking remarks: 3:30 pm Media: Photo and interview opportunities are available for media. Award participants will also be completing challenges on Sunday, March 9 from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm.
