Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity - TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup finds out what Toronto waters are harbouring
Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire Services will recover harmful debris and litter in Lake Ontario TORONTO, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire Services will dive into Lake Ontario to recover harmful debris and aquatic litter. This year's dive features the Unit's new submersible, which allows viewers to see the bottom of Toronto's harbour. Previous Toronto dives have recovered a motorcycle, a sewing machine and even a rickshaw. What will this year's dive uncover? WHEN: Thursday, September 18, 2008 9:00 a.m. - Recommended arrival time 9:15 - 9:45 a.m. - Toronto Police dive into Lake Ontario and reveal recovered litter (*)9:00 - 11:00 a.m. - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: Little Norway Park - on Lake Ontario at the foot of Bathurst Street Platform on the south-west end of the park by the water WHO: Roger St. Louis, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation John Nightingale, President, Vancouver Aquarium Tony Maas, Senior Advisor, Freshwater Policy, WWF-Canada WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year, over 60,000 Canadians will work together from September 20 to 28 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Torontonians are encouraged to drop by the September 20th Kick-off Event at Woodbine Beach Park (meeting at the Main Gazebo) at 10:00 a.m. to help clean the city's shoreline.
