RRSP season a great time to ensure protection is in place
Reviewing your insurance coverage should be part of your financial planning TORONTO, Feb. 3 /CNW/ - Canadians reviewing their investment portfolio during RRSP season often overlook their insurance needs as part of their financial planning strategy. Developing an insurance portfolio with your finances in mind can protect assets and manage liabilities - including your home - most people's largest liability. Use RRSP season as a smart opportunity to take stock of what you own - and what you owe - to make sure you're protected from the "accidents of life." "People's insurance needs change over time, so we think it's important to review your insurance 'portfolio' at least once a year as part your ongoing financial planning," says Jane Duchscher, Vice President, TD Insurance. "Keeping the big picture in mind, rather than limiting your focus to stocks, bonds and rates of return, helps to protect your assets and ensure you're managing risks appropriately." "Insurance is your financial protection, so make sure you have both the right type and an appropriate amount of it in place," said Patricia Lovett-Reid, Senior Vice President, TD Waterhouse. "RRSP season is a time when many Canadians meet with a professional to review their financial goals and it's a great opportunity to discuss insurance to ensure that you and your family are adequately protected." Here are a few questions Canadians should ask themselves at least once a year about their insurance portfolio: - How do I best protect my largest asset, my home? - Do I still need life insurance if I'm not married or if I don't have children? - Should I take out mortgage insurance or life insurance or both? - If I am young and healthy, do I need critical illness insurance? - If I have a two-car household, is there are a way to reduce my auto insurance costs? - What can I do to try and lower my insurance premiums?
