Rain rain go away: The majority of water damage claims are made during the summer months
TD Insurance customized coverage helps ease homeowners' water damage woes
TORONTO, July 9 /CNW/ - Warmer summer weather often means rain and
thunderstorms, and unfortunately for many Canadians the extra rainfall can
also lead to water damage to their homes. Most of the water damage claims that
TD Insurance Home and Auto receives are made during the summer months, which
means that now is a good time for homeowners to review their home insurance
policies to identify any gaps in their water damage coverage.
"When homeowners think of risks to their homes, water doesn't seem like a
threat but it is a common form of damage to homes during the summer," says
Henry Blumenthal, Vice President and Chief Underwriter, TD Insurance. "Whether
it's moisture seeping through the foundation or rain leaking through the roof,
water is like an uninvited houseguest that won't leave."
Even if homeowners take precautions to protect their property, unexpected
leaks and excess moisture can take their toll. Left unattended, water damage
can cause serious structural problems and create toxic molds that can lead to
health problems down the road.
Standard home insurance offers protection for water damage that occurs
within your house and for additional protection from the elements outside, TD
Insurance Home and Auto now offers customized water damage coverage. This
add-on to home insurance offers extra protection to cover the cost of the
water damage in the event that the following happens:
- An ice storm damages your roof and water seeps into your walls;
- A water pipe bursts and floods your basement;
- There is a sudden leakage of rain, snow or water through your roof,
walls, doors or windows;
- Water backs up or overflows through eaves, downspouts, rainwater
gutters or roof drains;
- Surface or ground water seeps through your basement walls; or
- Your sewer connection backs up or overflows.
Homeowners can get a better idea of how their home is at risk from water
damage by visiting www.td.com/waterdamage. There's even an animated house tour
that shows how water can affect a home's structure.
"It only takes a pinhole in a pipe, and suddenly you find yourself with
major water damage to your home," adds Blumenthal. "Customized water damage
insurance coverage will help protect your home and your wallet from a common
and often underestimated cause of insurance claims."
