Canadian Navy dives-in to encourage Halifax residents to help protect Canada's environment TORONTO, Sept. 11 /CNW/ - WHAT: To kick start this year's nationwide cleanup event and encourage residents to participate in a local cleanup on September 15th, divers from the Canadian Navy's East Coast Fleet lead by HMCS Fredericton will be diving into Halifax Harbour in search of harmful debris and aquatic litter. The results promise to be an eye opener. The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup was created by the Vancouver Aquarium and has been operating for more than 12 years. Today, it is one of the largest conservation initiatives in the country. With a record number of registrations this year, participants will clean up more than 1,000 shorelines along rivers, streams, lakes, oceans and wetlands in every region of Canada from September 15 through 23, 2007. All data collected around items found on the shorelines is tallied and shared with the international community. After the exclusive media event on September 12th, Halifax residents are invited to participate in a public shoreline cleanup co-organized by Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada that will take place on Saturday, September 15th, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Rainbow Haven Beach Provincial Park.
