The TD Community Resilience Initiative will support United Way’s Atlantic Compassion Fund to help seniors, children, LGBTQ2+ youth and Black communities
HALIFAX, [October 14, 2020] – TD Bank Group (TD) has dedicated $150,000 in donations to help support local community organizations that have been impacted by COVID-19, under TD Community Resilience Initiative. The recipient charities and non-profits in the TD Atlantic Region will receive this donation through the United Way's Atlantic Compassion Fund to help support program and initiatives for seniors, children, LGBTQ2+ youth and Black communities. This donation from TD will help keep these resources running, so they can continue providing these vulnerable populations with services such as grocery delivery, bagged lunches, mental health supports, alternative shelters and care packages.
A recent COVID-19 Impact Poll1 commissioned by TD revealed that Canadian adults surveyed under the age of 34, as well as those from the Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour communities, are among the most likely to experience financial insecurity, job losses and reduced income as a result of the pandemic. The same survey also found that of those surveyed, Canada's general population has become more financially vulnerable and less financially confident since the start of COVID-19. Together, these factors have increased the demand for support and services from Canada's community organizations. The pandemic is also forcing many charities and non-profits to rapidly pivot to an online delivery of their programs.
The focus of the TD Community Resilience Initiative is to provide both immediate and long-term support for organizations that deliver frontline services as well as longer-term programs critical during this time of disruption.
"Through this complex and difficult time, we've had the opportunity to stand with many community organizations across our region to help support COVID-19 response and recovery," stated Jenn Auld, Vice President of Retail Banking, Atlantic Region, at TD. “This work in Atlantic Canada is important to the future well-being of the communities across our footprint and we've worked to identify organizations that have immediate needs, as well as those that work with communities that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.”
In Atlantic Canada, the donation to United Way’s Atlantic Compassion Fund aligns with the Bank's focus on helping to support vulnerable populations during this challenging time:
- Helping isolated seniors in remote Newfoundland and Labrador communities and outports
- Supporting children experiencing food insecurity and isolation in New Brunswick
- Supporting LGBTQ2+ youth experiencing isolation, mental health and primary health risks in PEI
- Helping Black and African Nova Scotian led organizations provide critical community services in Halifax Regional Municipality
In addition to this donation, TD is also contributing financial support to community-based food security solutions in each province, an issue that continues to be magnified due to COVID-19.
“The Atlantic Compassion Fund was the first fund in Canada to focus on COVID-19 relief efforts,” says Sara Napier, President and CEO, United Way Halifax – one of 11 United Ways in Atlantic Canada working together to manage the Fund. “In each province across the region, the TD donation is supporting programming which serves unique communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. We are grateful for the bank’s genuine care and generosity.”
This donation is part of the TD Community Resilience Initiative, which has, among other commitments, allocated $25 million (CAD) globally to help strengthen community resilience today and into the future through the TD Ready Commitment, the Bank's global corporate citizenship platform.

1- The TD COVID-19 Impact Poll examined the impact of COVID-19 on the financial situation of Canadians surveyed. A total of 936 online interviews with English and French-speaking adult Canadians were conducted by Northstar on behalf of the TD Bank Group between April 20 and May 6, 2020.
